
Lata faced rejection for having ‘too thin’ voice. She requested her father to join him on stage and they performed together. There, she overheard people requesting her father for a song performance. She was nine years old when she was on a tour in Solapur with her father’s theatre company. Lata’s first concert performance was at the age of 9. Her first day at school turned out to be her last day as she was restricted from bring her younger sisters along with her. Lata dropped out from school on her first day. Simultaneously, she received her music lessons from her father. At the age of five, she started acting in her father’s musical plays that were then called Sangeet Natak in Marathi. Lata’s career as an artiste began when she was but a child. But then she was renamed ‘Lata’ after ‘Latika’, a character from one of her father’s plays ‘Bhaaw Bandhan’. He extensively worked with famous Indian singers such as Asha Bhosle and Lata Mangeshkar. Sudhir Phadke has 111 films to his credit as a music director, 21 of which are in Hindi. He was the main inspiration and founder member of India Heritage Foundation in the United States. Phadke was connected with Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh for over 60 years. He was also actively involved with Goa Freedom Movement and in post freedom fight of India Sudhir Phadke last sang and composed music for this movie.

In last days of his life, Phadke was involved in producing a Hindi film on the life of the Indian freedom fighter Vinayak Damodar Savarkar. All 56 songs were also recorded in Phadke's own voice. Phadke set to music all 56 songs, and they were sung by different singers for radio ( Manik Varma, lalita Deulkar, Lata Mangeshkar, Phadke himself, Vasantrao Deshpande, Ram Phatak, Usha Atre). Stage performances of the program continue to draw huge crowds even today.

Geet Ramayana, based on poet G D Madgulkar's verses, is one of Phadke's most popular works. Their son Shridhar Phadke (born 1950) is also a composer and singer. Phadke married his fellow singer Lalita Deulkar. He was also an immaculate playback singer. During his long career, he composed music for many Marathi and Hindi films. After beginning his career with HMV in 1941, he joined the Prabhat Film Company as music director in 1946. Phadke acquired his primary tutelage in vocal classical music from the late Vamanrao Padhye in Kolhapur. His birth name was Ram Phadke, but he later changed his name to 'Sudhir' when he composed a song for HMV. Sudhir Phadke was born in Kolhapur on 25 July 1919.
